A lecturer at Memorial University for two decades and an occasional lecturer at University of New Brunswick, Gerard has a Ph.D. in American (Gothic) literature. He is an experienced workshop leader, delivering multiple sessions at the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick WordSpring, and as a faculty member of the prestigious Piper's Frith retreat in Newfoundland. In 2017, Gerard was invited to deliver a lecture to Masters in Creative Writing students at Newcastle University, UK, as well as a public reading at the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts.
Gerard also edits the work of select candidates, for a fee. Because comprehensive editing can be so intensive, he can only mentor those who are both dedicated to the craft of writing and who show great commitment and promise. Gerard makes his decision after reading a short excerpt of a writer's work and discussing their writing and goals.
